With the NBA Finals over and Los Angeles celebrating yet another title, looking back at the season shows just how big the NBA was to the spread of social networking and the ever-growing Twitter.

Shaquille O’Neal (@THE_REAL_SHAQ) amassed over 1.2 million followers by being as real as it gets, replying to fans directly on his “Shaq-berry” and offering tickets to Suns games at the mall by Twittering to see which of his followers could tag him first. Mavs owner Mark Cuban got himself a $25,000 fine for critical comments about referees on a Twitter post. Teams, the NBA itself, and players swamped the web through Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to deliver great content and a real connectedness with fans. Social media blog Mashable has a great social media case study on sports and it’s effectiveness this season with the NBA.
